- The name of Arzal is undoubtedly in the beginning a word made up of the "rear" preposition of Celtic "the are" = on, close to - and of the Latin word "sal" = salt. ARZAL = close to salt. Why this name? - Arzal is halfway between two almost islands which still lived or live with salt: in the peninsula of Guérande, salt of Guérande celebrates it is always collected today. The peninsula of Rhuys has, as for it, produces much salt of the Middle Ages at the end of 19th century. They are the monks of Saint-Gildas of Rhuys who made arrange the first salt-water marshes in the Middle Ages.
